2006 Covington graduate Logan Brown captured fourth place in the 96 KG/211.5 lb. weight class at the FILA Junior Freestyle Wrestling Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday. Brown won five matches and lost two in the prestigious tournament.
"I'm a little disappointed because I thought I could have wrestled better," said Brown, who has high expectations of himself. "But I haven't wrestled a lot of freestyle, so I did pretty well."
Brown, who owns virtually every Covington record in wrestling and is the Buccs' only state wrestling champion, began the tournament with a 2-1,6-0 decision over Derek Ross of Loper Wrestling Club.
He then advanced in the 32-man bracket by defeating Matthew Porter, also from the Lion Wrestling Club, 4-3,3-0.
The Purdue wrestler fell into the consolation bracket by falling to Jared Platt (NYAC) via pin in 0:49. Platt would eventually capture second place, losing in the finals to Taylor Moore, who wrestled unattached.
"I got myself into a bad position and he took advantage," Brown described. "He threw me and I wasn't able to recover."
Logan rebounded with a dominating performance against Dustin Bauman (Panther Wrestling Club). Brown won by the score of 2-0,8-0.
This set up a rematch with Derek Ross, whom Brown defeated earlier in the tournament. The result was the same as Logan captured a victory by the score of 3-0,2-2.
Brown then advanced to the consolation final by defeating Mingo Grant (Team Orangevale) in impressive fashion, 1-0,6-0.
Despite falling to Ed Phillips (Cliff Keen Wrestling) to close out the tournament, Brown found himself high on the podium with a fourth place medal.
"This is a good learning experience for me," stated Brown. "It's good to compete in a large arena like this."
Brown, who red-shirted his freshman year at Purdue University, hopes to use this experience to catapult himself into bigger and better things next season.
"I'm looking forward to next season," said Brown. "I have some big goals I'd like to accomplish over the next four years and this (the FILA Junior Freestyle Tournament) is part of the learning process."
