November 3, 2007 EASTERN MICHIGAN
2006 Covington graduate Logan Brown has been chomping at the bit to get on a collegiate mat as a varsity wrestler for Purdue University.
After red-shirting his first year, Brown's wait finally ended this Saturday at Eastern Michigan as the Boilermakers took part in their first tournament of the season. And he didn't disappoint in a tough 197 lb. bracket.
Brown cruised through his first match with a dominant 18-9 victory over Zach Williams (UV) and then matched that performance with another impressive performance against Josh McGotty (LIN). Logan captured a 14-5 major decision over McGotty to set up a match with Taylor Moyer (NAV).
In a tightly contested match, Brown was able to take a 6-2 decision over Moyer to move within one match of reaching the finals.
A spot in the finals wasn't in the cards as Brown dropped a 9-3 decision to Mike Tamillow, a senior from Northwestern, who eventually captured the tournament championship with an 8-3 victory over Joe Williams of Michigan State.
Tamillow was the Big-Ten Champion and an All-American last season in compiling a 37-5 record.
The red-shirt freshman rebounded, however, as he defeated John Schoen (another Northwestern Wrestler), 3-2 in the consolation finals.
Typical of Logan, his expectations were higher as he discussed his first varsity action.
"I did OK," Logan said over the phone. "I should have done better against the Northwestern kid, but overall I wrestled pretty good. It's good to be able to get going though. I'm pumped to get back out there and keep getting better."
The wait for Logan to get back on the mat won't be nearly as long this time. He will be back in action at the Michigan State Open on November 10th.
