MARCH 7, 2010 - MICHIGAN
For the third straight year Logan Brown, a junior wrestler at Purdue University, is headed back to the NCAA Championships.
Needing to finish in the top seven at 197 pounds in the Big Ten Championships at Michigan State University over the weekend, Brown took fourth, his highest career finish in the tournament after placing fifth his freshman and sophomore seasons.
The 2006 Covington graduate and a state champion at 189 pounds his senior year at Covington, Brown entered the Big Ten tournament a shockingly low no. 7 seed. This after concluding the regular season with a 29-9 record, ranked in the top 15 in the nation in virtually all ranking systems and holding an 11-4 record against Big Ten competition.
Brown opened the tournament with an 11-2 major decision over Tyler Dickenson of Michigan State University, breaking open a close match after the first period with several takedowns in the second and third frames.
In his next match against Trevor Brandvold of Wisconsin (#7 ranked in the nation) Brown held a 2-1 lead into the third period. But he was called for stalling with six seconds left, which resulted into a penalty point. Riding time for Brandvold then decided the match, which moved Logan into the consolation round while Brandvold went on to win the Big Ten title.
Brown advanced through the consolation bracket with an impressive 8-2 victory over Matt Powless of Indiana (#14 ranked in the nation) and a medical forfeit over Iowa's Chad Beatty (#4 ranked in the nation).
The victory over Powless avenged a 4-1 defeat in a dual against Indiana in February and set up a rubber match with Michigan's Anthony Biondo (#8 ranked in the nation), who Logan had beaten 4-3 and by medical forfeit earlier in the year.
This time, however, Brown came up on the short end of the scoreboard as Biondo took a 5-4 decision after the Purdue wrestler came close to capturing the winning takedown.
With his top four finish in the Big Ten Championships, Brown improves to 32-11 on the season. He also moved into 16th place in Purdue history with 99 takedowns, passing Tim Dernlan's 1996 total of 97 and moved past Evan Robinson in career takedowns with 238, which is good for 13th in school history.
Brown will be back in action on March 18th in the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Nebraska.
