Logan Brown continues to rack up the honors as a junior wrestler at Purdue University - the latest being his selection as an Academic All-American.
"It's pretty sweet," said Brown of his accomplishment. "I'm pretty excited about it."
Not as much as his parents, Randy and Karen Sargent.
"My parents were pretty emotional about it too," Brown said. "My dad told me he's been waiting ten years for this. I never made an all-academic team in high school. I was close, but never made it."
As a sophomore Brown earned Academic Big Ten honors, narrowly missing out on All-American status as a student/athlete.
Reaching one of his primary goals as a junior made it that much sweeter.
"I'm holding around a 3.3 or 3.4 GPA," he said. "To make it after all of the hard work is pretty gratifying."
The 2006 Covington graduate has made headlines on the wrestling mat with three straight NCAA appearances, but his focus on academics goes virtually unnoticed - except when he returns to Covington and talks to kids in the community.
Since attending Purdue University Brown has returned home each spring to visit the kids at Covington Elementary and was selected as a guest speaker last year at the fifth and sixth grade overnighter organized by the Covington PLUS organization.
And he makes it a point to emphasize the importance of education to the younger kids every chance he gets.
"I tell kids all the time how important it is to get good grades," Brown said. "It's pretty sweet when you work so hard for something and finally achieve it."
What Logan has accomplished to this point of his collegiate career doesn't come as a surprise to his old high school wrestling coach, Tom Barbee.
"That's Logan," Barbee said. "He's such a determined kid that when he says he's going to do something, he's going to do it. He's a great example for the younger kids in the community."
One more goal Brown is working towards is becoming an All-American on the wrestling mat with a top-eight finish at the NCAA Championships.
"That's something I want to accomplish next year," Brown said. "I thought I'd do it this year, but I have one more year to get it done."
And it's a sure bet Logan Brown will put in the work to get there.
