Logan Brown, a 2006 Covington graduate and freshman on Purdue University wrestling team, captured another impressive victory against Indiana University, Friday.
The Boilermaker 197 pounder defeated the Hoosier's Joe Fagiano 5-1 to improve to 20-8 on the season.
"It was a good win," said Brown of his bout over the phone. "It was made even sweeter because our team won."
Purdue upset the 17th-ranked Hoosiers 18-16 to improve to 10-4 in dual competition and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
The win also guaranteed first-year head coach Scott Hinkle a winning season. Hinkle, who was the primary reason Logan Brown chose to go to Purdue, becomes only the third coach in school history to do so in his first year.
"We're wrestling pretty well," Brown said. "We definitely wrestled a lot better tonight than we did against Ohio State. We had some guys pick up some big wins tonight. You can see all the guys gaining in confidence."
The biggest win for Purdue was that of teammate Seam Schmaltz, who defeat 12th-ranked Andrea Hernandez 2-1 to seal the Purdue victory.
But in a tight match dual, Browns match with Fagiano was just as big.
The two 197 pounders went toe-to-toe over the first period, but neither wrestler could score on the other.
Fagiano took the down position to start the second period and earned an escape point to take a 1-0 lead.
But the Indiana wrestler wasn't willing to grapple with Brown and was called for stalling to tie the score at 1-1 to close out the period.
Logan chose the down position to start the third and immediately escaped to take a 2-1 lead. Fagiano helped Brown some more by giving up another stalling point at the 6:20 mark.
With two stalling points given up, Fagiano had no choice but to wrestle. Brown took advantage just eight seconds later by recording a takedown to seal the 5-1 victory.
Brown and the Boilermakers have little time to enjoy the big win as fourth-ranked defending national champion Minnesota comes to West Lafayette on Sunday. The match will air live via webcast at www.purduesports.com.
