The Covington High School wrestling team hosted a tri meet with the Lehman Cavaliers and the Graham Falcons B team and emerged victorious in both contests to improve their dual meet record to 11-1. The Falcons were coming in as champions of the Bellefontaine Invitational and fielded a very talented group of lower-weight wrestlers including returning state-placer Zac Thomusseit at 140 lbs.
In their match with Graham, the Buccs found the going tough from the 103 lb class through 140 lbs, as they dropped each match to the Falcons and yielded 38 team points. Covington stormed back in the middle to upper weights, however, winning the final seven bouts by either a pin or technical fall to claim a narrow 41-38 victory.
The Buccs squared off against Lehman in their next dual and won a little more convincingly, taking 10 of the 14 bouts and claiming a 55-24 victory over the Cavaliers. Graham B won the remaining dual of night, defeating Lehman by a 58-24 score.
Going 2-0 for the Buccs were Logan Hall (145 lbs, 1 pin), Bobby Wiltshire (152 lbs, 1 pin), Ryan White (160 lbs, 1 pin, 1 tech. fall), Brian Ely (171 lbs, 2 pins) and Logan Brown (189 lbs, 2 pins). Going 1-1 for Covington were Sam Herron (103 lbs, 1 pin), Jordan Tebbe (112 lbs), Jake Jennings (119 lbs, 1 pin), Quentin Layman (125 lbs, 1 pin) and Justin McMillion (140 lbs). Also competing for the Buccs were Jesse Pearson (135 lbs), who almost emerged with a pin vs. Lehman, and Cody Swabb (130 lbs).
In reserve action, the Buccs went undefeated on the night as Michael Corkhum (112 lbs) earned a pin over Jordan Bair of Graham and both Travis Wamer (152 lbs) and Nick Christian (160 lbs) went 2-0 with 2 pins apiece. The Buccs travel next to Troy on Friday and Saturday to compete in the 16-team Troy Invitational.
JR. HIGH...
In the Jr. High dual with Lehman, the Buccs stormed to a 54-36 victory over the Cavaliers. Andrew DeHart (104 lbs), Tyler Tebbe (110 lbs), Josh McMillion (116 lbs), and Joe Evans all won by pin. Gaining forfeits for Covington were Sam Angle (80 lbs), Brandon Flora (86 lbs), Lonnie Bitner (92 lbs), Jerry Evans (134 lbs) and Nick Adams (142 lbs). Dropping their bouts were Cory Ely (98 lbs) and Aaron Devenport (122 lbs).
The Covington Junior High Buccaneer wrestling team played host to Lehman Catholic in a dual meet Tuesday evening that was filled with pins to win.
In the first match of the night, Tyler Tebbe of Covington faced off against Evan Goffena of Lehman in the 110-pound weight class.. With Goffena getting his first takedown, Tebbe turned the tables and scored on a reversal to tie the match. Tebbe went on to earn nearfall points to end the period. In the second period, Tebbe was able to score on another takedown and eventually got the pin, but Goffena made Tebbe earn it.
The 116-pound weight class pitted Cavalier Giles Hinders against Buccaneer Josh McMillion. McMillion was able to pin Hinders to keep the Covington pin streak going.
The most exciting match of the evening was a 122-pound match-up between Tyler Sargent of Lehman and Covington's Aaron Davenport. The first period ended with Davenport clinging to a 4-2 lead. In the second period, Davenport took control with a takedown and nearfall and looked to have the situation under control, but as wrestling is known for, anything can happen. Taking a 9-2 lead into the third period, Davenport picked up where he left off, but Sargent scored on a reversal and went to work. His 110 percent effort paid off with a pin of Davenport late in the third period.
The 150-pound match also provided the crowd with excitement. Joe Evans of Covington met up with Elliott Harrod on the mat for three periods of good effort by both wrestlers. Evans outscored Harrod in the first period, but Harrod came back in the second period and looked to be going for the pin until Evans was able to get the reversal and nearly pin Harrod. The third period saw Evans score a reversal and seize the opportunity to end the match by pinning Harrod.
Next on the mat was the 98-pound class, with Matt Breisch representing Lehman and Cory Ely representing the Buccs. Breisch broke the Buccs' pin streak by pinning Ely for the win.
The final match of the night was in the 104-pound weight class with Covington's Andrew Dehart and Kameron Schmitz of Lehman. Dehart was quick to rack up points before pinning Schmitz in the second period.
With the pinning contest over, the Buccaneers won the meet by the score of 54-36.
