2002-03 Covington Buccaneers: (Sitting) Monica Batdorf, (Kneeling left to right) Bobby Wiltshire, Josh Mahan, Logan Brown, C.J. Potter, Ryan Vanderhorst, Brian Ely, Wesley Yingst, Jordan Tebbe, Malorie Hall, (Standing left to right) Coach Tom Barbee, Billy Wendel, Ezra Mohler, Jesse Hitt, David White, Dusty Hess, Josh Vargo, Brandon Hartzell, Derrick Canan, Coach Eriv Vanderhorst.
Head coach Tom Barbee and assistant Eric Vanderhorst return for their fifth season together as coaches of the Covington wrestling team. Tom previously coached the team from 1980-89, a span during which the Buccs won four district titles and a regional title. Eric wrestled for Covington from 1989-92 and was a state qualifier, district champion and sectional champion.
The Buccaneers are looking to build upon their strong finish from last season where they placed 5th out of 17 teams at Sectionals despite not filling four weight classes. Seven of the ten competing wrestlers placed in the top 5 at the tournament. The Buccs graduated three seniors (Mike Stephan, B.J. Owens, David Taylor) and a lot of talent from last year’s group, but with a larger, more experienced overall team this year, the Buccs could have a very memorable season.
A large senior class, including Derrick Canan, Dusty Hess, Jesse Hitt, Josh Vargo, Billy Wendel and David White, will lead this year’s squad and contains the majority of returning wrestlers. Also back are juniors Ben Adams, Brandon Hartzell and Mitchell Herron. Canan is a returning District placer, while Hess, Hitt and Wendel are returning District qualifiers, and Adams is a returning District alternate. New to the team are sophomore Aaron Staley and freshmen Carl Brown, Logan Brown, Brian Ely, Josh Mahan, C.J. Potter, Jordan Tebbe, Ryan Vanderhorst, Ritchie Watkins, Bobby Wiltshire and Wesley Yingst.
Please come out and support this year’s team as we strive to improve upon last year’s success and bring more championships home to Covington.
