2023-24: BUCCS GET OFF TO GOOD START

Mechanicsburg Invitational

Covington finished in 2nd place out 21 teams at the Mechanicsburg Invitational, taking runner-up to host Mechanicsburg. The Buccs had seven wrestlers compete at the event and all seven finished in the top 7 of their respective weight classes.

The Buccs crowned four individual champions at the event – Carson Taylor, Michael Hagan, Jericho Quinter and Caleb Ryman. Taylor finished 5-0 with 5 pins, beating Lucas Eland of Lakeside in the 120 lb. finals. Hagan finished 4-0 with 4 pins, defeating Springfield Shawnee’s Logan Stover in the 132 lb. championship bout. Quinter won a 7-5 decision over Brayden Childers of Twin Valley South in the 138 lb. finals, finishing with a 5-0 record with 3 pins. Ryman went 4-0 on the day, pinning his first three opponents before earning a 6-1 decision over Twin Valley South’s Clayton Woodgeard.

Covington’s three additional placers were Christian Clark (3-2, 2 pins) and Aveyen Meek (3-2, pin), both taking 4th place, and Kaden Thompson (2-3, pin) who finished in 7th place.

Covington travels to the 21-team Coldwater Invitational on Saturday, December 16.

Milton-Union Jr. High Invitational

Covington finished in 9th place out of 18 teams at the Milton-Union Jr. High Invitational, with thirteen wrestlers competing at the event.

Brody Taylor (92 lbs.) and Isaiah Mumford (116 lbs.) both claimed the tournament championship at their respective weight classes. Taylor advanced to the finals with three consecutive pins before defeating Versailles Reece Magoteaux with a 6-3 decision in the championship bout. Mumford earned four consecutive pins at the event, including a pin in the finals over Troy’s Carter Owen.

Kolson Petty (86, pin) and Wyatt Kerber (98, 2 pins) both fell one match short of placing with 3-2 records, while Weston Roth (122, 2 pins) was also one win shy of placing as he advanced to the semifinals and finished with a 2-2 record.

Gavin Brown (104) finished 2-2 with 2 pins while a number of other Buccaneers picked up wins and wrestled well for Covington including Landyn Carnes (98), Sam Godin (122), Cooper Turner (128), Grayson Feight (142), Gibson Leach (150, pin), Ryan Brown (175, pin) and Haydan Wintrow (205).

Covington MVKWA Youth Wrestling Meet at Northmont

Covington travelled to Northmont for a Miami Valley Kids Wrestling Association (MVKWA) meet on Sunday. The event included Anna, Clinton-Massie, Miami East, Milton-Union, Wapakoneta and host Northmont.

Taking first place for the Buccs were Oliver Ouellette, Braden Hole (2 pins), Brayden Feight (2 pins) and Zaidyn Sherman (2 pins).

Finishing second were Mason Ouellette (pin), Dalton Brown, Harvey Snyder (pin) and Brawley Sides.

Taking third place at the event were Ethan Owens (pin), Carter Roth and Ayden Cheatle.

Each of the kids gained valuable experience and represented Covington well. The Buccs travel to the Greenville Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 7.
